It’s hard to see somebody ruin their own lives, but to ruin their futures, too? Now that’s brutal.
Unfortunately, that’s the case for one woman’s children, who will eventually miss out on inheriting $2.8 million dollars — because it’s all going to her pets.
The woman has quite the fortune
Identified only by the surname Liu, the elderly Chinese woman who hails from Shanghai made news when she declared that the entirety of her children’s inheritance will be going to her pets, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
Her first will did indeed include her children
The initial will, made a few years ago, was updated to remove her adult children from inheriting her $2.8 million (20 million yuan) fortune.
Liu made the choice as a punishment for her children
She claimed that her children failed to visit or care for her when she was ill. According to her, her children barely contact her.
The only ones there for her were her pets
Liu, who has both cats and dogs, said they were the only ones there for her while she was ill. Pets do make amazing companions when you’re sick, so honestly I totally understand this one.
Her money will now go to them
And don’t worry, she’s thought it through. The pets won’t just randomly inherit the money — instead, she contacted her vet and arranged for them to be the administrator of her assets.
This includes care of the pets
After she passes, her money will be used for the continued care of her pets, as well as any offspring they may have. Liu is going to take care of generations of her pets!
She did initially want to just give the money to her pets
Likely out of an act of defiance, Liu’s original plan was indeed to just name the pets in the will and leave the money to them. Pets can’t do anything with money, after all, so this would likely have been her idea of revenge against her children.
However, that was not legally possible
She was advised that her money couldn’t just go to a random animal, so she went with the second best option and set up the veterinarian plan.
She was also advised to make sure someone keeps an eye on the vet
“Liu’s current will is one way, and we would have advised her to appoint a person she trusts to supervise the vet clinic to ensure the pets are properly cared for,” Chen Kai, an official from China’s Will Registration Centre told the Post.
