I FOUND A NOTE ON MY DASH—AND SOMEONE THANKED ME FOR WAITING

I was leaving the grocery store, juggling a fussy baby and bags, when I noticed an envelope under my wiper. Inside were two twenties and a handwritten note:

“I noticed the sticker on your car. Take your hero out to dinner when he comes home. Thank you both for serving. — United States Veteran God Bless.”

I’d forgotten about the yellow ribbon sticker on my car, marking my husband’s deployment. The simple act of kindness reminded me that I wasn’t invisible, and that waiting for him was its own kind of service.

When he came home, we used that money to celebrate. I shared the story, and we both cried. Weeks later, while volunteering at a veterans’ center, I met the man who left the note—Silas, a Vietnam vet. He explained he’d left it because he remembered how hard it was for his wife to wait for him.

His small act of kindness transformed both our lives. He found new purpose, mentoring other veterans, and wrote a memoir. This story shows how even small gestures can have a profound impact.

Kindness has a ripple effect—never underestimate its power.
