“JOI” is taking over — but most people have no idea what it actually is

Back in my day, a “wild night” meant a Marvin Gaye record, some cheap wine, and hoping your roommate didn’t come home early. Fast forward a few decades, and now I’m hearing about things like “JOI,” “pegging,” “shibari,” and something called “aftercare,” which I thought was just what you needed after a colonoscopy.

I mean, when did everything get so… technical? These days, people don’t just hook up — they choreograph it like it’s an Olympic sport.

There are trends popping up faster than my blood pressure after a slice of cheesecake, and half the time I have to Google them in incognito mode so my grandkids don’t find out I’m trying to stay hip.

And now? Everyone’s raving about something called “JOI” — which, let me tell you, is not short for “joy,” although some folks would argue otherwise. Let’s break it down, shall we?

Quietly exploded

So, apparently, there’s a new obsession heating up the adult entertainment world — and chances are, you’ve seen the term “JOI” pop up without fully knowing what it means.

While it might sound like something out of a high school health video, JOI — short for “J*** Off Instruction” — has quietly exploded into one of the most lucrative and emotionally charged corners of the internet. According to Vice, it’s a ”fetish quietly dominating the adult content economy”.

It’s not just a passing fad, either. Industry insiders say this intimate, voice-led kink is completely reshaping the landscape of adult content. And platforms like OnlyFans and Clips4Sale have seen demand skyrocket.

“JOI to me is an erotic performance style where the speaker, through voice, video, or text, guides the viewer or listener through the act of mturbation,” said MelRose Michaels, founder of S Work CEO and a seasoned creator, in an interview with Vice.

“It blends control, seduction, dominance, and emotional connection all at once.”

Emotional intimacy over explicit content

Unlike traditional adult videos, JOI isn’t necessarily about nudity or physical action. It’s about control. Creators look directly at the camera, speaking to viewers as if they’re the only person in the world, guiding them moment by moment. That level of emotional focus? It hits different.

Avery Martin from Clips4Sale says that while guided mturbation has been around in different forms for a long time — often called “mturbation encouragement” — JOI has grown into a standalone fetish, driven by the intimacy of creator culture.

“It’s a direct connection between the fan and the creators,” Martin explained. “And since the pandemic, interest has surged across the board.”

The numbers don’t lie

JOI isn’t just popular — it’s booming. According to Clips4Sale, U.S. sales of JOI content have soared 186% since 2022. Internationally, the trend is just as strong. Germany saw a jaw-dropping 208% rise, and Australia clocked in at 48%. The kink is now officially ranked among the top 100 adult categories worldwide.

But what makes it so addictive?

“JOI taps into more than just arousal,” Michaels added. “It fulfills the need to feel wanted, controlled, praised… or denied.

“It creates a fantasy where they’re not just ‘another viewer’… Instead, they’re ‘the viewer.’”

A psychological twist

For many creators, JOI isn’t just a sexual script — it’s a journey. MissWaltrude, a European fetish artist and hypnokink practitioner, describes it as layered and trance-like.

“‘JOI,’ to me, is a m**turbatory trance experience with multiple layers,” she said. “It’s about taking control of another person’s erotic energy, layer by layer.”

She says the fetish speaks to something deeper than lust:

“‘JOI’ gives permission,” she added. “It lets someone safely confess, ‘Hey, this turns me on,’ and then be commanded to dive deeper. Obedience is pleasure – and there’s great pleasure to be found in obedience.”

Not your average adult content

At the heart of JOI is a surprising truth: it’s not about what you see — it’s about what you feel. For many viewers, it’s the emotional intimacy, the fantasy of being seen and spoken to directly, that keeps them coming back.

JOI isn’t just a kink — it’s a revolution in how people connect with content, and with themselves.
