A chilling new twist has deepened the already harrowing mystery surrounding the death of 18-year-old Florida cheerleader Anna Kepner aboard a luxury cruise ship — and it’s now threatening to tear her family apart.
Anna, a vibrant straight-A student and varsity cheerleader from Titusville, Florida, was found dead on November 7, 2025, in her cabin on the Carnival Horizon as it sailed back toward Miami. While authorities have remained tight-lipped, new court filings suggest that federal investigators may be looking closely at someone within Anna’s extended family.
According to details obtained by the Daily Mail, a cabin maid discovered Anna’s body hidden under the bed in her room, covered with life jackets and a blanket. The ship docked in Miami the next morning, and the FBI immediately took the lead on the case, as the incident occurred in international waters.
On November 18, the story took an even darker turn when a court motion surfaced in Brevard County, filed by Anna’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson. The document was submitted as part of her 2024 divorce case and requested extra time to respond to court deadlines due to an “extremely sensitive and severe circumstance.”
The motion reveals that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is actively investigating Anna’s death — and that “a criminal case may be initiated against one of the minor children” from Shauntel’s previous relationship.
Shauntel, who married Anna’s father, Chris Kepner, brought three children into the marriage: one adult and two minors. The filing notes that Shauntel, her children, and Anna’s father were all on the cruise together when Anna died. It further explains that Shauntel has been advised by FBI investigators and her attorneys that anything she says in the family court proceedings could risk compromising the criminal investigation, hence her plea for delay.
Earlier reporting indicated that Anna hadn’t been feeling well the night before she died. She reportedly returned to her cabin early, but when she missed breakfast the next morning, her family began searching for her. Not long afterward, her body was discovered.
Federal agents are now carefully reviewing shipboard CCTV footage from the Carnival Horizon and analyzing data from passengers’ electronic key cards to determine who accessed Anna’s cabin and at what times. Her cellphone has been confiscated for forensic examination, and investigators are interviewing family members, passengers, and crew in an effort to reconstruct her final hours. Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed it is cooperating fully with the FBI.
So far, neither the FBI, Shauntel, nor Anna’s father Chris has publicly addressed the latest revelations in the court documents. However, Chris did speak out earlier, describing the agony of waiting in the dark.
“I have no idea what is going on right now,” the devastated father said. “We are just trying to sit still and wait for answers.”
A crane operator from Titusville, Chris explained that the cruise was meant to be a family getaway for Anna, her stepmother, stepsiblings, and younger relatives. When Anna’s body was found, the entire group was detained for questioning and offloaded from the ship along with other passengers.
With the incident occurring while the ship traveled between Cozumel and Miami, jurisdiction lies with the FBI rather than local police. For Chris, the lack of information has been almost unbearable.
“The FBI hasn’t shared anything with me yet,” he admitted. “I would imagine they’re going to be in contact with me about it, but I know as little as everybody else.”
The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner confirmed that Anna was pronounced dead at 11:17 a.m. on board, though her exact cause of death has not been made public.
To those who knew her, Anna was far more than a case file. In a statement to ABC News, her family described her as a “happy, bubbly, straight-A student” who could light up any room. “If you were sad, she’d make you laugh,” they said. “She would joke around and be the funniest little person in school.”
They shared that she had recently taken concrete steps toward a career in public service. “She had just finished taking the test to join the military,” her relatives explained. “She was already talking to recruiters and had chosen her career path. She wanted to do something that would help her community.”
Beyond school and future plans, Anna was deeply involved in her town. She volunteered locally, was a familiar face in Titusville businesses, and was known for her kindness and enthusiasm. She started gymnastics at age two, later joined her high school’s varsity cheerleading team, and loved the water — earning both her boater’s license and scuba certification. She enjoyed shopping, makeup, and time with friends, and was affectionately called “Anna Banana” by her family.
In the wake of her death and the swirling speculation around it, the Kepner family has largely withdrawn from public life. Online theories and social media rumors have turned their grief into something painfully public.
“I’ve had to shut the world out,” Chris confessed. “I don’t watch the TV anymore. We’ve literally had to stop doing anything to do with the internet.”
What was supposed to be a joyful family cruise has become a nightmare layered with uncertainty, federal investigation, and intense scrutiny. As the FBI continues its work behind closed doors, those who loved Anna are left clinging to memories of a bright, determined young woman — and waiting for the truth about what really happened on that ship.
