When we first saw our young son standing near a large tree in the park, I thought he was simply fascinated by a unique piece of bark. The texture and pattern seemed to have caught his attention, and it looked like nothing more than a moment of childhood curiosity.

Their brownish, bark-like bodies camouflage so well that you might pass by — or even brush against them — without ever realizing they’re there. They responded quickly, arriving with the right protective equipment to safely remove the caterpillars from the tree. Afterward, a bright warning sign was placed on the nearby path to let other park visitors know to be careful in that area.
The experience left a lasting impression on our family. Since that day, my approach to nature walks has changed. I still love exploring the outdoors, but I’ve learned to do it with more awareness. Now, when I take my grandchildren to the park, I bring gloves, a small magnifying glass, and even a compact emergency kit — not because I want them to be fearful, but because I want them to be prepared.
