Beware of rip currents—your life could depend on it!” 🌊⚠️ A calm spot in the water might not be as safe as it seems—it could be a rip current, responsible for 80% of ocean drownings. Learn how to stay safe and escape if caught in one in the article below 👇
There are many things in life that we all should beware of that can be a potential danger and cause harm to us intentionally or not. Much attention is drawn to the risks of being ashore as the number of people drowning is getting even bigger. So, if you are at the beach and notice an area of water that looks unusually calm and quiet with no waves —don’t go closer and stay away. This could be a rip current, which can appear suddenly along the shore. These spots often look darker because the water is deeper, and the surface is smoother with fewer breaking waves.
If you enter a rip current, it can quickly pull you out to sea at a speed even an Olympic swimmer would struggle against and the chance to make it out is very low. Rip currents are behind around 80% of all ocean drownings.
If you find yourself caught in one, try to stay calm however impossible that might sound. Don’t swim directly back to shore. Instead, swim parallel to the beach until you’re out of the current, then head back in.
