Twin toddlers drown after grandmother with Alzheimers leaves door open

In a heartbreaking tragedy out of Oklahoma City, 18-month-old twin toddlers, Locklyn and Loreli, drowned after slipping unnoticed into their family’s backyard pool. The devastating incident occurred after a door was reportedly left open, possibly by their great-grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

Their mother, Jenny Callazzo, a stay-at-home mom of six who also runs an online boutique, discovered the twins unconscious in the backyard pool, which had become murky and algae-filled. Despite immediate efforts by emergency responders, both children were pronounced dead later that day.

Just days before the incident, Callazzo had shared a photo of her toddlers happily playing outdoors with the caption, “just want to play outside.” That moment, once a sweet memory, now stands in stark contrast to the unimaginable grief that followed.

Callazzo, her husband, and her elderly grandmother all live together in the same home. Neighbors described the horrifying scene as first responders arrived, recalling the image of a heartbroken mother sitting silently in the back of an EMS vehicle while paramedics worked desperately to save her children.

Authorities are still investigating but have confirmed there is no suspicion of foul play. A GoFundMe campaign has since been launched to support the family with funeral and related expenses, and messages of sympathy and solidarity have poured in from across the community.

This tragedy underscores the urgent need for pool safety measures, especially in households with toddlers or cognitively impaired adults. Laura Gamino, injury prevention coordinator at OU Health, emphasized how quickly and quietly drowning can happen. “Drowning is silent,” she warned. “Toddlers don’t have the skills to help themselves out of water, and by the time someone notices, it can already be too late.”

Gamino recommends secure, four-foot-high fencing around pools with locked gates inaccessible to children. “It only takes a moment of distraction,” she said. “And a life can be lost.”

As the family grieves the loss of their precious twins, their story serves as a painful reminder of how quickly everyday moments can turn tragic—and how vital it is to safeguard young children from hidden dangers, especially in their own backyards.
