Phil Collins, the drummer and lead singer of Genesis, is one of the most well-known musicians in existence and has won eight Grammy awards. Along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, he is one of only three musicians to have sold more than 100 million albums both as a solo artist and as a band member.
Collins fell in love with making music after being born on January 30, 1951, in London, England, to creative parents. Collins recalled that when he was only five years old, his uncle made him a drum kit out of toy drums, tambourines, triangles, and cymbals. The cliche “Well, at least it will keep him quiet” comes to mind, he said to Interview Magazine.
Soon after, he started doing plays at his parents’ boating club.
