Louisiana Requires “In God We Trust” Display in Public Schools

Louisiana has taken a significant step in steering its classrooms away from divisive ideologies and back towards a God-centered environment. In an effort to address concerns raised by parents, the state has passed legislation mandating the display of the national motto, “In God We Trust,” in every public school classroom. This law, known as HB 8, went into effect this week, just in time for the new school year.

The move to have “In God We Trust” prominently displayed in classrooms is a positive development for public education in Louisiana. In recent years, some teachers have used classroom decorations and posters to push personal narratives and fringe theories, much to the dismay of parents. By requiring the display of the national motto, the state is ensuring that classrooms prioritize a God-centered atmosphere.

The legislation clearly outlines where and how the motto should be displayed. Each public school classroom “shall display the national motto in each building it uses and classroom in each school under its jurisdiction.” Size and composition guidelines have also been established to prevent any attempts to hide or downplay the motto. The minimum requirement is for the national motto to be displayed on a poster or framed document that is at least eleven inches by fourteen inches. The motto must be the central focus of the display and printed in a large, easily readable font.

Setting these standards is crucial to ensure that the display of “In God We Trust” is done in a meaningful and visible way. Without these guidelines, some teachers or schools might attempt to fulfill the requirements merely for the sake of compliance. By specifying the size and composition, Louisiana is upholding the importance and significance of the national motto.

With this new legislation in place, Louisiana is taking a significant step towards cultivating a God-centered atmosphere in public classrooms. By prominently displaying the national motto, the state is reinforcing the values that are foundational to our nation. It is a welcome move that recognizes the significance of faith and spirituality in education, and reflects the beliefs and values of many Louisianians.
